BELOW ARE IDEAS ... NOTE THAT THEY ARE IDEAS... DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY ARE ALL GOOD. read over the ideas and make note of which ones you think are feasable and whatnot. Feel free to come up with adapted ideas, as well. We figured this one would have more of a coffee house feel to it... Bryan/Robin playing acoustic music on stage at times - a more intimate setting with the chairs arranged differently, perhaps? making use of our small end tables. Jen and i picked up 3 more solid square tables. we could bring down the tables from the youth game room, too.
Perhaps we could just look this over and we could bring to the table for this one. hopefully we can handle some of the planning for this one using email and facebook - seeing that we have little time to meet and plan for this one.
you can post thoughts/ideas below by posting in the comments box or reply ideas on facebook or email.

ideas for the next kscope. coming up in (less than) 2 weeks.
theme idea: slow down.
scriptures: John 12:1-11 + Luke 10:38-42
mary and martha host Jesus @ their home for a meal... Martha is the busy-body... running around, distracted, trying to assure that everything is just right, while Mary sits attentively @ Jesus' feet, listening to his every word - even anointing His feet with oil.
Jesus basically states that it is important to take time to pause and just 'be' with Him...
ACTIVITY IDEA: perhaps in small groups / or around the coffee/end tables, 4-5 people could share in conversation about Mary and Martha.
possible questions: who do you resemble more? Mary? (slowed down, pays attention to detail... able to budget time with God or Martha? (always on the go... wanting relationship with Christ to be right - but always so busy, trying to make things perfect for everyone?)
this could be followed by some sort of hands on activity that would parallel busy and slowed down lifestyle... anyone have any ideas?
------
other scripture:
1 Kings 19:11-13
God did not come in the chaos - he came in the gentle whisper.
parallels how we have to 'be quiet and slow down' from our hectic, busy lives in order to not miss out on those God-moments.
Chaos & Crickets from Tim Beck on Vimeo.
i used this video @CYF2009. i could adapt it if i had time. before playing it - i told a story about how Micah loves crickets and the sound/music that they make... and how one day i was in such a rush i couldn't even hear them... he eventually got me to stop what i was doing and told me to listen to the crickets...i think that goes along with the 'God coming in a gentle whisper'... so the video above is supposed to parallel the chaos of life - then at the end - it goes dark... followed by the sound of crickets... and then the 1 Kings 19 verse.

HERE is an outline of a worship service by a faith community in London called 'Grace'. the theme was SLOW. there may be some good ideas found there.
i particularly liked this idea:
Set up:
Set the room up with two screens in the middle back to back – project speed on one side and slow on the other.
we couldn't do back to back - but perhaps side by side - two projectors projecting onto the stage wall. one screen shows FAST MOTION VIDEO while the other shows SLOW MOTION VIDEO. this could be played on a loop. i've collected some video clips that i could assemble together.
another idea from the Grace - SLOW service that could be adapted?
Before the service:
Give out tickets for the fast track that lets people in early/quickly – make it slow for others.
...invite people to answer one or two questions - how do you live your life? how do you want to live your life? – and place a Post It® note or sticker on according to their answer.
what are your thoughts on this?
another idea from Grace - SLOW
Welcome/intro
invite people to take watches off and turn phones off
maybe we could have them place these items under their seat - or in some sort of container with each coffee table?
Words of Wisdom from Ferris Bueller: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." [Clip]
another Grace - SLOW idea
Slow Confession
Group discussion
on contemplative (slow) vs commuter (fast):
Questions along lines of
Is slow good? Is fast bad? If you're in an accident, you want the ambulance
to come as quickly as possible. When else is speed good?
We work quicker so we can work fewer hours - but do we?"
are you naturally more a commuter or a contemplative? martha or a mary?
this connects with Mary/Martha. thoughts? could this be adapted?
At the end of the Grace - SLOW service they made prayer cords. Rachel, Chels - you remember when we made prayer cords @ Lakeside in '07? perhaps we could create a prayer cord with certain beads on them - where attendees of Kscope would make their own?
Cord could consist of Red, Yellow and Green beads? Red - meaning stop. Yellow - meaning slow down and Green meaning go fast. this could serve as a reminder of our need to spend time with Jesus. each cord could remind us of being patient. our relationship with Jesus takes time?
maybe the colors could have double meaning... red = blood of Jesus / yellow = _____? / green = life or growth?
this is an idea off the top of my head and it may be stupid. We would need cord or string and beads if we did something like that.

Story of Joshua Bell ( i told this @ CYF '09 - but it could be told by anyone. Jen found it and showed it to me one day last year).
Bell is a world renowned violinist. once - as part of an experiment with the Washington Post - he played in a DC subway. hardly anyone stopped to listen. [Story and Video]
fascinating story that can parallel us missing out on God and His greatness all around us.
---------
Rich Mullins article titled Consider the Lilies
about the love of Jesus and how Jesus paid attention to details... like the lilies of the field, etc.
Perhaps this story could be read or re-told in someones own words?

Radiohead song: The Tourist
this song was written after Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke was in Paris and how he noticed how so many people were in such a rush that they were not taking time to see the beauty of the city - they were missing it all. the chorus says : hey man, slow down... idiot, slow down.
i had thought about using that song as a backdrop to a video collage that shows how busy people are. not sure though.
---------
i have a story about Addison. a few months ago she created the Resting Club and invited me to join it.
---------
is there a JJ Hellar song to go along with this theme?

what other ideas does anyone have? What stands out from this massive list?
thoughts?
i know this might seem cumbersome - lot of information here, i know - but any ideas are good at this point. If anyone feels drawn to anything in particular, let us all know. Take the lead and see what happens!
Lets try to stay in communication regarding this Kscope. thanks!
1 Comment:
First reactions - It seems like we have a lot to go with here if we make the theme slowing down. I don't see a strong correlation with service, but that's ok. We can discuss service a bit with the story of Mary and Martha but focus on the idea of slowing ourselves down. I like a lot of the ideas here. We'll have to decide which are best. I'll take some more time to check out links.
I would gladly read the tortoise and the hare . . . as long as we find out what "elevenses" is.
What's this face book thing you speak of?
